Google has removed its recently released App Permissions overview from the Play Store and introduced a new section named Data Safety. This new section accurately details what data the app collects and why.
Google Play Store’s new detailed section is available for many users, and this section will make them confident about downloading apps from the Play Store.

Google Play Store Replaced App Permission Section With New Data Safety

When Google first announced the new data privacy section last year, the company made it clear that its system would rely on information provided by developers.
On a support page, Google states that developers have until July 20th to fill out a data privacy form for their apps, noting developers “alone” must make “complete and accurate declarations” for their apps.

“Google Play reviews apps across all policy requirements; however we cannot make determinations on behalf of the developers of how they handle user data,” Google explains. “Only you possess all the information required to complete the Data safety form.”

Google says it will take “appropriate action” if it finds any discrepancies between developers’ reported information and the app itself.

It’s worth noting that the Apple App Store has a similar policy in place for its privacy “nutrition” labels, and also requires developers to submit “self-reported summaries” about their apps’ privacy practices.

Just like Google’s doing now, Apple puts its trust in developers to provide truthful information about the data their apps collect, which a report from The Washington Post found is often “misleading or flat-out inaccurate.”

The Google Play Store already features an expandable permissions section. However, while this section offers a fairly detailed look into all the connections and device features that an app may try to access, it doesn’t make clear what information the app may be accessing, collecting, or even selling.
For example, if an app uses location features, the section mentions its purpose below, such as for advertising or location-based experience.
And for there is no restriction on you to block any data collecting, you are still allowed to restrict any permission you don’t want the app to access.
For more clarity, this new section also mentions that the data is “Collected but not shared,” Google doesn’t ask developers for this information, and Google’s team generates it after checking the app file.
In modern versions of Android, users can already give or take permissions for their device’s camera, microphone, storage, and more at will and per application, so these latest additions are a welcome change for us all.
Let me know in the comments whether or not you’re checking the Data safety section of a listing before installing your next app or game.
Similarly, I’d love to hear whether or not you think your favorite apps and games are asking for too much information now that all of their practices will be visible to the public.
This new section will be widely available to all play store users after 20 July because it is the last date for mandatory all apps, and some people are already allowed to see this section.
